Ulama: the body of Mullahs (Muslim scholars trained in Islam and Islamic law) who are the interpreters of Islam's sciences and doctrines and laws and the chief guarantors of continuity in the spiritual and intellectual history of the Islamic community.

Caliphate: the era of Islam's ascendancy from the death of Mohammed until the 13th century; some Moslems still maintain that the Moslem world must always have a calif as head of the community.

Freedom Party: the most popular and feared Islamic extremist group in central Asia; advocates `pure` Islam and the creation of a worldwide Islamic state.

Mosque: (Islam) a Muslim place of worship that usually has a minaret.

Mollah: a Muslim trained in the doctrine and law of Islam; the head of a mosque.

Fatwah: (Islam) a legal opinion or ruling issued by an Islamic scholar.

Call To Prayer: (Islam) A call for worship recited by a Muslim man at prescribed times of the day.

Ramadan: (Islam) a fast (held from sunrise to sunset) that is carried out during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

Abu Sayyaf: a small gang of militants claiming to seek a separate Islamic state for the Muslim minority in the Philippines; uses bombing and assassination and extortion and kidnapping.

Caaba: (Islam) a black stone building in Mecca that is shaped like a cube and that is the most sacred Muslim pilgrim shrine; believed to have been given by Gabriel to Abraham; Muslims turn in its direction when praying.

Hadj: the fifth pillar of Islam is a pilgrimage to Mecca during the month of Dhu al-Hijja; at least once in a lifetime a Muslim is expected to make a religious journey to Mecca and the Kaaba.

Hegira: the flight of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 which marked the beginning of the Muslim era; the Muslim calendar begins in that year.

Islamism: a fundamentalist Islamic revivalist movement generally characterized by moral conservatism and the literal interpretation of the Koran and the attempt to implement Islamic values in all aspects of life.

Taleban: a fundamentalist Islamic militia; in 1995 the Taliban militia took over Afghanistan and in 1996 took Kabul and set up an Islamic government.

Monotheist: a believer in one god.

Colonialist: a believer in colonialism.

Theosophist: a believer in theosophy.

Abiogenist: a believer in abiogenesis.

Shintoist: a believer in Shintoism.

Bahai: a teacher of or believer in Bahaism.

Occultist: a believer in occultism; someone versed in the occult arts.

Mohammedan: a follower of Mohammed.

Buff: an ardent follower and admirer.

Adhere: be a devoted follower or supporter.

Methodist: a follower of Wesleyanism as practiced by the Methodist Church.

Kismat: (Islam) the will of Allah.

Ethnic: not acknowledging the God of Christianity and Judaism and Islam.

Mahomet: the Arab prophet who, according to Islam, was the last messenger of Allah (570-632).

Shia: one of the two main branches of orthodox Islam; mainly in Iran.

Zakat: the fourth pillar of Islam is almsgiving as an act of worship.
