Barilla: bushy plant of Old World salt marshes and sea beaches having prickly leaves; burned to produce a crude soda ash.

Smelter: an industrial plant for smelting.

Exudate: a substance that oozes out from plant pores.

Tenderiser: a substance (as the plant enzyme papain) applied to meat to make it tender.
