Endometrium: (pregnancy) the mucous membrane that lines the uterus; thickens under hormonal control and (if pregnancy does not occur) is shed in menstruation; if pregnancy occurs it is shed along with the placenta at parturition.

Puerperium: time period following childbirth when the mother's uterus shrinks and the other functional and anatomic changes of pregnancy are resolved.

Conception: the act of becoming pregnant; fertilization of an ovum by a spermatozoon.

Abruptio Placentae: a disorder of pregnancy in which the placenta prematurely separates from the wall of the uterus.

Abortion Pill: an abortion-inducing drug (trade name RU_486) developed in France; when taken during the first five weeks of pregnancy it blocks the action of progesterone so that the uterus sloughs off the embryo.

Teens: the time of life between the ages of 12 and 20.

Quin: one of five children born at the same time from the same pregnancy.

Quad: one of four children born at the same time from the same pregnancy.

Twin: either of two offspring born at the same time from the same pregnancy.

Triplet: one of three offspring born at the same time from the same pregnancy.
